Joanna Billingham's work is essentially concerned with the formalities of painting itself, particularly with the use of colour to define space and to convey emotion. There are figurative references to a sense of place, and suggestions of a fairytale scene or an animation frame where the familiar and the obscure collide, resulting in a quirky, surreal landscape. More recently a use of pattern and repetition has become a particular concern, resulting in more abstract work.
