'The lines, dots and forms are expressions; layered, pushed and pulled - spontaneous marks that represent the breath and therefore the physical activity that defines my experience of life.' The combinations and series of drawings and ceramic sculptures have been installed to form works that express ideas on cultural identity and displacement. Performance and video is incorporated to express the process of drawing and making, reaching out to the sense of sight, sound, smell and touch. The realisation of Mia's work is due to residences and fellowships in the USA, South America, China, India, East Africa and Europe through awards from the Arts Council, Triangle Trust, Philadelphia Clay Studio, Tasara Centre India, Mackerere University Uganda and British School of Brussels. These opportunities have provided a period of time to construct sensitive and powerful work such as “Nine steps in response to you”, “All creatures great and small”, “While I was trying to explain you trapped me”, “…..or not to be?” and “I love you dearly dearly And I hope that you love me”, “Wish” and “Kiss me”. Mia Fernandes trained at the Royal College of Art, Goldsmiths College and Winchester School of Art. Working as an artist, educator and curator Fernandes is currently based in London. |
