Dates: 29 - 30 August 2009, 14.00-17.00
Venue: Luxmore Gardens SE14, a small park tucked behind Lewisham Arthouse
When: A 2-day event at the end of summer and just before the return to school.
Where: Luxmore Gardens, a small park tucked behind Lewisham Arthouse an artist-run cooperative with artist’s studios, a gallery and workshops.
What: An ‘Art-Park Happening’ in which EVERYONE is invited to see how a visually stunning installation emerges.
Event: Apart from the RED installation other activities such as making animals, flowers, caterpillars, butterflies, and birds took place, artfully added aside other surprises. The event and installation was photographed and an exhibition of SIMPLY RED & GREEN is planned at the Lewisham Arthouse Gallery.
Why: To celebrate the park, and to revive and generate a greater awareness of its existence.  To bring the community together to enjoy a creative activity. To raise consciousness of up-cycling, re-cycling and to experience a single colour and form in the context of nature.
Who was involved: Arthouse artists together with everyone who’d like to join in, of any age.
The Victorians used to say, “Blue and green should never be seen”. What we say is “RED AND GREEN SHOULD BE SEEN!
We had been asked by the Brockley Ward Assembly to come up with an idea to raise awareness of a slightly under-loved green space Luxmore Gardens; the result was SIMPLY RED AND GREEN which took place on 29 and 30 August. We asked members of the public to come along and help paint objects and material red and then adorned the park, which worked visually to create a striking contrast to the predominant natural green of the space. There was a great turn out - with music and games as well as art, and we were very pleased with the results.
