Toby Rye graduated from Ruskin School of drawing and Fine Art in 1990 and since then has been actively involved in both the practice and teaching of art. As well as being a member of Lewisham Arthouse, he teaches part-time in a London Further Education college. Rye's work explores layers of meaning - of growth, decay and fragility - by staining and painting images derived from natural forms onto wood. He then reveals the inherent quality of the surface by gouging into the wood to create a deeper level of drawn marks.
